How to Choose the Right Clean Door

Cleanroom doors are critical airtight components of the cleanroom enclosure system. Unlike standard architectural doors, their selection must focus on three core objectives: maintaining pressure differentials, preventing dust accumulation, and withstanding disinfection processes, while also aligning with the workshop's cleanliness class and process zoning.

Regarding materials, doors with electrostatic powder-coated hot-dip galvanized steel panels are suitable for standard Class D or C clean areas. However, 304 stainless steel is preferred for environments involving high humidity, frequent disinfection, or stricter cleanliness requirements, while 316L stainless steel is required for highly corrosive conditions. Door panels should feature an aluminum honeycomb core to ensure structural rigidity and resistance to deformation. The door design adheres to hygienic principles, utilizing rounded corners instead of sharp angles, eliminating exposed rivets and right-angled grooves, and removing cleaning dead zones. Surfaces must withstand repeated wiping with disinfectants such as alcohol and hydrogen peroxide without coating delamination, which could cause particulate contamination.

The sealing system is crucial for maintaining stable pressure differentials. Continuous, integrated EPDM or medical-grade silicone gaskets are installed around the door perimeter, with high-grade areas utilizing a double-seal configuration. An automatic drop-down bottom seal is mandatory; it seals against the floor when the door is closed and retracts when opened to minimize friction-induced dust generation. Hardware components are uniformly made of 304 stainless steel and paired with adjustable hydraulic door closers to ensure automatic closing. Electronic interlocks must be installed on doors for buffer rooms and airlocks to prevent cross-contamination caused by airflow between areas of differing cleanliness levels.

During the initial selection phase, key parameters—such as cleanliness class, wall panel thickness, pressure differential direction, and personnel/material flow patterns—must be clearly defined. Doors in positive-pressure clean areas should open toward the clean side, whereas those in negative-pressure areas should open toward the contaminated side. For projects subject to audits—such as medical device manufacturing or pharmaceutical GMP workshops—the compliance of the door structure and sealing components must be verified. This ensures the mitigation of long-term operational risks, such as seal failure or panel deformation, thereby maintaining consistent airflow patterns and environmental stability within the clean zones.
